The following is a chronological record of Sidmouth in Bloom’s competitive history and milestones, formatted for clarity.

1970s: Foundation and Early International Success

  • 1971: Sidmouth in Bloom Committee formed to enter Britain in Bloom campaigns.

  • 1972: Trial run conducted.

  • 1973: First competitive entry; awarded the Sargent Cup for Best Small Town in the South West.

  • 1974: Awarded the West Country Award for Merit.

  • 1975: Awarded the Sargent Cup (Best Small Town in the South West); Entente Florale winner (Best Town in Europe); potential award for Best Small Town in the British Isles.

  • 1976: Received four additional awards for Best Town in the British Isles following the 1975 success.

  • 1978: English National Finalists for Floral Town; Best Small Town in the British Isles.

1980s: National Recognition

  • 1980: Designated Britain’s Floral Town; English National Finalists; British Tourism Commendation for Hotels and Guesthouses.

  • 1981: Designated Britain’s Floral Town; English National Finalists; Best Small Town in the British Isles.

  • 1983: English National Finalists; awarded Best English Town.

  • 1984: English National Finalists; Best Small Town in the British Isles.

  • 1985: Awarded the St Bridget’s Cup.

  • 1986: Awarded the St Bridget’s Cup.

  • 1987: Awarded the William Bryford Cup and the Keep Britain Tidy Award.

  • 1988: English National Finalists; awarded the St Bridget’s Cup.

1990s: Sustained Regional Dominance

  • 1990: South West in Bloom: Sargent Cup Gold winner.

  • 1992: English National Finalists; South West in Bloom: Sargent Cup Gold winner.

  • 1996: Awarded the London and Manchester Cup.

  • 1997: 25th Anniversary of Sidmouth in Bloom; South West in Bloom: Sargent Cup Gold winner.

  • 1998: English National Finalists; South West in Bloom: Sargent Cup Gold winner.

  • 1999: Regional winners.

2000s: Innovation and International Relations

  • 2000: Regional winners and South West area winner; awarded the Abbis Cup.

  • 2001: English National Finalists; awarded the British Airways Cup for 30 years of contribution.

  • 2002: Awarded the Sargent Cup and Silver award for Coastal Resort.

  • 2003: English National Finalists; Silver in National Finals; South West Coastal Resort.

  • 2004: West Country Small Town winner; awarded the Preece Cup.

  • 2005: National winner (Coastal Resort); Silver Gilt (Small Town in South West); Award for Service.

  • 2006: Best Small Town in the West Country; awarded the Preece Cup.

  • 2007: Hosted Russian delegation; South West in Bloom: Gold winner; National Finals: Silver Gilt (Nominated Coastal Town).

  • 2008: South West in Bloom: Sargent Cup Gold winner.

2010s: Global Outreach and Elite Competition

  • 2010: Awarded the Gold Cup and Preece Cup; potential McDonald’s Best Seaside Entry.

  • 2011: Gold award; Best Coastal Town.

  • 2012: Responsibility transferred to a new committee; South West in Bloom: Silver Gilt; Britain in Bloom: Silver.

  • 2013: South West in Bloom: Preece Cup Gold winner; Bloom’s Award at the International Communities in Bloom (Canada).

  • 2014: South West in Bloom: Sargent Cup Gold winner; Community Champion Award.

  • 2015: South West in Bloom: Sargent Cup Gold winner.

  • 2016: South West in Bloom: Gold (Champion of Champions); Silver Gilt medal for 'Floral Maritime Heritage' at BBC Gardeners' World exhibition.

  • 2017: UK Best Small Town: Gold winner; South West in Bloom: Sargent Cup Gold winner.

2020s: Resilience and Community Focus

  • 2020: RHS Certificate of Recognition and South West in Bloom Certificate of Excellence for efforts during COVID-19.

  • 2021: South West Champions of Champions: Gold award and Joint Winners; Sargent Trophy for Outstanding Effort and Dedication; RHS 'Highly Commended' Community Award (Planting with a Purpose); RHS 'Achievement' Community Award (Cultivating your Community).
